Recommended reading: The book Dawn Conley discussed with Oprah

McHenry BOC Dawn Conley has her own story about her recommendation this week:

For an intense, intriguing, suspenseful and twisted read, try Fall on Your Knees, by Ann-Marie MacDonald. Here’s what the jacket copy says:

The Piper family is steeped in secrets, lies, and unspoken truths. At the eye of the storm is one secret that threatens to shake their lives — even destroy them. Set on stormy Cape Breton Island off Nova Scotia, Fall on Your Knees is an internationally acclaimed multigenerational saga that chronicles the lives of four unforgettable sisters. Theirs is a world filled with driving ambition, inescapable family bonds, and forbidden love. Compellingly written, by turns menacingly dark and hilariously funny, this is an epic tale of five generations of sin, guilt, and redemption.

This book holds a special meaning for me. A friend and I saw it recommended on Oprah’s Book Club series. So our purpose in reading it was to get on Oprah’s show. More specifically, since we had actually attended tapings of the show four times before, our goal was to get on TV — to be seen by the audience at home. We knew where to sit to make that happen. If you ever watched Oprah, you might remember the old stage where she walked through a corridor and then shook hands on the way out. We sat right there. Before each taping, a producer comes out and hypes up the audience. We were all talking about the book and making comments. I said something so profound that they moved me to FRONT AND CENTER in the first row! That meant Oprah was going to talk to ME! So I left my awesome seat and looked behind and waved good-bye to my friend and mom. They were just as excited as I was. The show mostly consisted of us watching the previously taped Book Club segment on a screen, as the Book Club talked about the book, as well as members of our audience making further comments.

My moment came when Oprah said, “Dawn, where’s Dawn?” Without hesitation and clear as could be, I shared my comment. I have it taped on an old VHS tape. It’s getting worn out from me rewinding it and rewatching my “claim to fame.”

Oh, and my friend was shown on TV in the beginning, in our original awesome seats, when Oprah came out. So we both achieved our goal!

It is amazing how you learn something new about your co-workers each and every day. I have worked with Dawn for five years and never knew she met Oprah. What a neat story to share.

What a cool story-and I am so jealous that you got to meet Oprah and be on the show! A goal on my bucket list that will never get fulfilled!
