Video tellers earn strong reviews, have fun, are hiring
“It’s like Skyping,” says Merry Justin, who comprises our video teller department along with Carlos Carrillo and supervisor Brittany Dahlke. “Some people, I think, thought it might be a little impersonal, but I almost think it’s the opposite.” After almost ten months, the video tellers have met with a great response from customers. They can do almost anything a traditional teller can, and they enjoy some nice extra benefits on top of that. And they’re looking for others to join their ranks. Read more about it here.
Around the Bank
We were a sponsor of the Chalk Art Festival in Bayshore on August 16 and 17. Above, Jessica Helminiak works on her winning entry in the North Shore Bank Youth Award category for artists 19 and under. “It was a very fun event,” says Bayshore Branch Manager Gloria Rosenberg. “It’s the second year we’ve sponsored it, we really enjoyed it, and it’s been very successful. • Weight Watchers needs YOU. Corporate Receptionist Nancy Hanson reports that we need just one more person to sign up for the next Weight Watchers At Work session for all participants to receive one free week of the program. Marketing Coordinator Mary Ott and her family made it out for the first of two employee family outings, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers home game on August 24 versus the Beloit Snappers. The T-Rats unfortunately lost, 4-2, but won the next two nights against Beloit, 7-3 and 6-2. For more photos from the event, click here.

• Concerts in the Park in Sister Bay. Our branch there sponsored the concert on August 20, which featured a performance by local favorites Bacchus Lotus, whose lead singer is the musical director at the town’s high school. Branch Manager Dede Mickelson reports that, “despite the questionable weather,” more than 300 people attended. “We all wore our NSB T-shirts and handed out over 150 NSB Recycle bags with our new checking account offer attached,” Dede says. “We also gave each person a ticket and handed out six gift certificates shortly after the concert started. Linda [Zielke] — our newest teller — was brave enough to go onstage and recognize everyone who made this happen, thank everyone for coming, and draw all the raffle tickets for the gift certificates.”

“In the many positions I have held, working for North Shore Bank has been great and truly rewarding!” says Commercial Loan Servicing Analyst Nicole McKenzie, who marks 15 years with the bank this week. She started at the Brookfield Capitol branch and held several other titles here until her current job.

North Shore Shape Up: How safe is spray-on sunscreen?
The New York Times tackled the question this month of how safe and effective spray-on sunscreens are, compared to sunscreen in lotion form — and the answer might surprise you. “The short answer is that for now, not even the Food and Drug Administration knows,” the Times says. Inhaling the aerosol particles could be harmful, especially given some of the minerals they contain, such as titanium dioxide, which is “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” according to a branch of the World Health Organization. Spray-on sunscreen also contains flammable ingredients, so it can be potentially dangerous to use near open flames such as grills or citronella candles. And the FDA is still researching how well spray-on sunscreens block ultraviolet radiation. As a result, for at least the rest of this summer, you may be better of sticking to the old-fashioned lotion.
