From HR: NSB honored again as Top Workplace
Congratulations to YOU! For the fourth consecutive year, North Shore Bank has made the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Top Workplaces list of top employers in southeast Wisconsin. This is wonderful recognition for each of us who works to make this a great place to work. We will take home our award during a recognition ceremony on June 12, and a special section of the Journal Sentinel featuring the winners will be published that weekend.
This will be the last year — for a while — that we take part in this particular survey. We will, however, continue to participate in American Banker’s Best Banks to Work For survey. If you recently completed this survey, thank you! We will learn the results in early July.
Once again — congratulations! —Molly Schissler, VP, Human Resources
Around the Bank
Green Bay West opens: The new Green Bay West location is now open for business! Happy housewarming to Branch Manager Sharon Hack and her team. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by for the grand opening celebration this Saturday, June 6, featuring a bouncy house and other activities for kids, petting zoo animals, giveaways and contests, refreshments, and more.
Positively Pewaukee: Back in April, North Shore Bank became the first business inducted into Positively Pewaukee’s Hall of Fame. The bank has partnered with the nonprofit for over 19 years and sponsors one of the Pewaukee area’s biggest and most popular annual events, Taste of Lake Country. “It was an honor to be the first business inducted,” said Pewaukee Branch Manager Patty Muehl. “We have a great working relationship with them, and they do so much for the community and its small businesses. They’re an award-winning Wisconsin Main Street organization, and North Shore Bank is happy to have them here.”
Above, Sussex Branch Manager Candy Walecki and Patty show off their Hall of Fame awards, with SVP Sue Doyle at left and Elaine Kroening, director of Positively Pewaukee, at right. The next Taste of Lake Country will be July 24 and 25.
Flag collection: North Shore Bank will collect worn and tattered American flags through June 15, in honor of Flag Day, scheduled for June 14. We’ll team up with the American Legion to properly retire the flags.
Race for the Hungry: Reminder: The Sussex branch is collecting food through June 30 to support local kids in need, and will hold a Race for the Hungry with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts next Thursday, June 11, at Piggly Wiggly at 10 a.m. All the food collected will go to the Sussex Food Pantry, which will distribute them to kids who need lunches during the summer, when school is out.
Branch of the Week
Oak Creek: The Milwaukee County community of Oak Creek — “where city meets the country” — is growing fast, thanks to offering its people a perfect blend of urban and suburban life. And North Shore Bank has been part of that growth over the last 10-plus years, participating in and sponsoring city events, and dealing with the occasional dead mouse. Branch Manager Senka Shkreli fills us in.

“The last 10 years has been a great learning experience,” says Tara Neuville, ABMS at Sturgeon Bay West. “I have worked with some absolutely amazing people, who have also become good friends and extended family. My favorite part about working at North Shore Bank is watching the bank grow and change. Another part I love is getting to know each of the customers and becoming a part of their lives.”
And Commercial Loan Servicing Analyst Theresa Krznarich marks 5 years with the bank this week.
Celebrations
AVP and Fox Point Branch Manager Carol Bergen and her husband, Keith, celebrated their 40th anniversary in Mazatlán, Mexico, in May. “Wonderful trip, beautiful weather,” Carol says. “We were there two weeks. Keith had his knee replaced last August, and his goal was to be able to walk the beach on our 40th — something he has not been able to do for 10 years. This year, he was able to walk the beach several times and up to a mile!”
Kudos

North Shore Shape Up
Get the right sunscreen: It’s finally sunshine season, and while that’s great news, it also means you should be taking steps to protect your skin. Seems simple, but recent research found that around 80 percent of 1,700 widely used sunscreens either contained harmful chemicals or didn’t provide sufficient protection. Over at MindBodyGreen, one of the founders of cosmetics retailer Sephora USA has some tips on how to pick a safe and effective sunblock:
- Use mineral-based, natural sunscreen. The key ingredient to look for is either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. The most common one to stay away from is oxybenzone.
- Wear makeup with an SPF. If you’re not outdoors a ton, a daily moisturizer, foundation, or lip balm with a Sun Protection Factor is still a good choice.
- Anything over SPF 50 is essentially meaningless. Once you get above 50, there’s only a slight difference in the protection provided.
- Get sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. An SPF rating applies to how well a sunscreen blocks UVB rays — the ones that cause sunburn — but not UVA rays — the ones that cause skin cancer and premature aging. Obviously, you want protection against both.
- No sprays! Get a sunscreen that’s applied topically instead of a spray, which you’re likely to inhale and which may easily miss parts of your body that need good coverage.
