Girls on the Run 5K draws crowd

Lots of kids and families came out for the 5K.

Product and Channel Marketing Manager Karen DeGarmo coached a team of girls, and Bayshore branch manager Rebecca Dougherty helped out with the Girls on the Run 5K Turkey Trot on November 13 at the Bayshore Town Center Mall.

Girls on the Run is a program for girls in the third through eighth grades. It combines training for a 5K run with workouts designed to improve self-esteem. The group says its goal is “to educate and empower preteen girls in order to prevent the display of at-risk activities (substance/alcohol use, eating disorders, early onset of sexual activity, sedentary lifestyle, depression, suicide attempts, confrontations with the juvenile justice system).” About 1,000 people were at the run.
