North Shore Bank welcomes Cristo Rey student interns
We are very proud to welcome the newest members of North Shore Bank! Starting next week, four students from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School will join us daily until mid-June 2018, as North Shore will be a new corporate partner with the school.

Cristo Rey Jesuit follows a unique, nationally successful work-study model, enabling each student to earn a portion of their educational costs by working in entry-level positions in Milwaukee-area companies. Through the work-study program, the students gain invaluable experience in professional work environments that will help them make informed decisions about their abilities and their future. Molly Schissler has more information about our four new interns — check it out!

Employees volunteer to make Taste of Wisconsin great

Kenosha Main teller Eugene Fox, Kenosha Central ABMO Katie Bedard, Julie, and McHenry ABMS Kerri Hoehn (with boyfriend Ryan next to her) at Taste of Wisconsin.

Around 47,000 people attended Taste of Wisconsin in Kenosha on the lakefront from July 28 to 30 — and North Shore Bank was part of the festivities. “This event is a major fundraiser put on by the Kiwanis Club of Western Kenosha,” area branch manager Julie Goebel said. “A lot of food, drink, entertainment, demos, and activities for the kids.”

Employees from all three local branches — Kenosha Main, Kenosha Festival Foods, and Kenosha Central — helped out for the event, along with some from other branches and Corporate. Visitors to our booth could enter a contest to win $500.

“A huge thank-you to everyone who volunteered to make this event such a great success!” Julie said. “I couldn’t have done it without all the support of our amazing employees.” See the long list of everyone who helped out!

New Hires for August 17
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.

Brookfield Square teller Calvin Cicona is from Delafield and previously worked for Waukesha State Bank. He shoots a traditional longbow and taught himself how to throw knives. “My father was an avid hunter, and I felt guns and compound bows were too easy; I seem to have a knack for making things harder for myself than they need to be,” Calvin says. “As to me learning how to throw knives: I saw The Hunger Games when I was in high school, and everyone wanted to learn how to shoot a bow. At that point, I had already learned to shoot a bow proficiently, so I decided throwing knives was the next best thing.”

Grafton teller Caroline Holzer is from Grafton and previously worked as a cashier at Whole Foods; she also attended school at MATC for animation. She says, “At one point, I was ranked 42nd in the world for Mario Kart. I’ve always played video games, and this happened a couple of years ago. I was sitting on the floor with my friends, and when the scores came out, I laughed so hard that I cried!”

Silver Spring teller Bryan Sotelo is from Greenfield and previously worked as a customer service representative at Pick ’n Save. He attends the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and will be a junior this year. Bryan notes, “I eat so much, and I don’t gain weight. I like bacon cheeseburgers and pizza a lot, and yes, people do get jealous of that!”

Mequon universal banker Douglas Tuhro is from upstate New York and previously worked for BMO Harris. He collects rare and antique books. •••

Kudos for August 17
A customer sent in this compliment for the team at Pewaukee:

My experience with North Shore Bank has always been tremendous. All there know my name, address, my needs, and encourage a safe feeling. Branch manager Patty Muehl is attentive and always aware of what is going on in the bank. Teller supervisor Danielle Ritz is friendly and efficient, with an excellent business attitude. Teller Megan Kubichek is efficient, courteous, and good at what she does. And personal banker Jewell Graham is courteous and business-like, while paying attention to small details.

“Many thanks to the Pewaukee team for delivering high-touch customer service and banking expertise!” says Craig Witz, VP, branch sales manager.

And internal customers praised customer service rep Max Retzlaff in the call center, Craig says: “During a recent roundtable discussion, several individuals mentioned that Max is consistently patient, friendly, and helpful when they are calling for assistance from the call center. Way to go, Max!” Colleen Egan, VP, customer service, added: “He does a great job, and I know he is a branch favorite.” •••

North Shore Shape Up: Exercises to fight aging

Illustration by Barb Cousins for Harvard Health.

Are you doing regular strength training? It’s especially important as you age, because you start losing muscle more quickly as you get older. But the benefits can be enormous, as Harvard Health explains:

Studies show that strength training not only can slow muscle loss, it can also help prevent or control conditions as varied as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and osteoporosis. And recent research indicates that it can also improve cognitive function, especially when added to aerobic exercise. As we age, strength training helps to preserve mobility and reduce the risk of falling.

The post notes that women in particular often avoid strength training because they feel it’s too time-consuming or are intimidated by going to the gym. But “it’s possible to work every muscle group in your own home with minimal equipment.”

You can see nine such exercises in this PDF recommended by a Harvard special health report. Take a look and stay strong! •••
