Share a memory for Mother’s Day!
In honor of Mother’s Day on May 13, we’d love to share some of your favorite mom memories in Shorelines next week. Here’s what to do:
- Share a short, true, meaningful story — 150 words or less — about your mom. It can be funny, heartwarming, or a tearjerker. Send it to shorelines@northshorebank.com. (Don’t forget to tell us her name.)
- Include a photo of your mom if you’d like! Make sure to ID everyone in the picture and say approximately what year it’s from.
We’ll run the stories in a post next Thursday. Looking forward to hearing from you! •••
More than a marathon: Carter tackles 50-mile races
For most of us, running the 26.2 miles of a marathon is an unthinkable achievement. But customer assistance specialist Sara Carter isn’t most of us: Last November, Sara was the first woman across the finish line at the 50-mile tBunk Endurance Challenge in Kettle Moraine State Forest.
Yep — 50 miles. And on May 12, she’s going to put on her racing shoes and do it again. Read more about Sara’s incredible athletic achievements now!
St. Francis Children’s Center event raises $55K for kids
North Shore Bank helped sponsor St. Francis Children’s Center’s Wine, Beer & Chocolate Tasting at the Holiday Inn Milwaukee Riverfront on April 21. “The event was a huge success and raised over $55,000 for the special-education, therapy, and support services the center provides to children with special needs throughout Milwaukee County,” Bayshore branch manager Rebecca McCartney said. This was the second year Bayshore has been involved in the fundraiser.
Pictured at the event are Bayshore personal banker Rhonda Mckinnie, Fox Point assistant branch manager–sales Michele Padavano, East personal banker Kenya Owens, Wauwatosa personal banker Raymundo Guardiola, and Rebecca. •••
Families enjoy music, science at Fox Cities Kidz Expo
Appleton Northland and Menasha employees helped out at the Fox Cities Kidz Expo on April 14 at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center. North Shore Bank was the stage sponsor for the event, which featured science demonstrations, trombone lessons, traditional Hmong dance, and music.
“We also had our own booth, where we played interactive financial education games with kids and shared financial literacy tips with parents,” Northland branch manager Heather Starr said. She estimates that over 1,000 people attended.
Other personnel who helped out were Northland assistant branch manager–sales Lacee Kalepp, floating universal banker DeDe Krause, Menasha personal banker Nate Scheuers, and Menasha teller Brandon Ferris. Pictured above are Lacee’s daughter Josilyn, Heather, Lacee, Lacee’s daughter Chloe, Nate, and DeDe and her son Sam. •••

New Hires for May 3
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.
Brookfield Capitol teller Teng Chang is from Milwaukee and previously worked at Wal-Mart. She likes spending time with her family when she’s not working. “We ride our bikes when summer comes, as well as other outdoor activities. In the fall, we like to take walks in the park and enjoy the colorful leaves and the nice cozy weather. I love to go sledding after the snow falls in the winter. When spring comes, we go fishing and have dinner outside. And most important of all, we do family night with a few movies and some snacks to enjoy and relax.” •••
North Shore Shape Up: Supplements to sunscreen
Warm weather has finally arrived, and that means it’s time to start thinking about your skin and the sun. If you’re concerned about skin cancer, sunscreen — SPF 30, at minimum — is a must. But Harvard Health notes there are a few other simple options that may reduce your odds of a skin cancer diagnosis:
- Nicotinamide. This form of vitamin B3 is available over the counter, and has been shown to be substantially effective at helping protect the skin from UV radiation. If you have a history of carcinomas or sun-related skin damage, consider taking a 500mg dose twice a day. Note that once you start taking it, you need to keep taking it every day to retain the benefits.
- Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. Over-the-counter NSAIDs can help prevent skin cancer. Their impact is not enormous, though, and taking large doses over the long term can lead to undesirable side effects, so check with a doctor before taking this approach. (Also note that Tylenol/acetaminophen is not an NSAID.)
- Polypodium leukotomos. This tropical fern extract is being marketed as an oral sunscreen, but there’s not enough research yet to say how best to use it and how well it works. Keep an eye out for more news about it, as further studies are done.
- Drink less alcohol. Studies have found an association between alcohol consumption and skin cancer. It’s not clear yet exactly what the association is — it could just be that as people drink more, they get more careless about sun protection. Regardless, there seems to be a relationship, and cutting back on drinks never hurts, from a health perspective.
Again, if you’re spending time in the sun, sunscreen is absolutely necessary, and protective clothing is a good idea, too. But if you want a little extra help for your skin, consider the above suggestions as well. Stay sunny! •••
