Community-Minded: Ostroski honors Polish heritage
As he gets older, Phil Ostroski finds himself more and more interested in the past — specifically, his Polish heritage, which he honors and celebrates through his volunteer work at the Polish Center of Wisconsin in Franklin.

“Both sets of my grandparents emigrated from Poland, so it’s a vehicle for helping me touch on and connect some family and historical cords,” says Phil, VP, commercial banking, for North Shore Bank.

He has been volunteering at the center for three years and has served as an elected member of its board of directors for two years. Read more about Phil’s work with the center — as well as the Tuesday-night patio parties there starting next week!

Big colors come through in employee flowers

Thanks for sharing your flower gardens with us! It’s incredible to see some of the bright and beautiful plants and landscapes North Shore Bank employees have nurtured. Employees enjoy gifts for bank’s 95th anniversary

In honor of North Shore Bank’s 95th anniversary this year, we hosted our family outing earlier this month at the Wisconsin State Fair. We also gave all employees a dandy umbrella and pair of shades — rain or shine, North Shore Bank has you covered, and it’s been that way for our customers for 95 years!

Above are Franklin teller Valerie Kochanski, assistant branch manager–sales Stephanie Bluemel, and universal banker Bryan Sotelo. And here are some more employees rockin’ their new eyewear and rain gear!

Greendale Village Days a success

North Shore Bank helped sponsor Greendale Village Days over the weekend of August 11. “It went well!” reported personal banker Samantha Damman, who said employees passed out over 100 bags containing information about our latest checking promotion, along with raffle tickets, pens from mortgage loan originator Tony Larke, and some other small prizes.

Pictured above are Southridge assistant branch manager–operations Tiffany Dettmann, assistant branch manager–sales Cassandra James, and Franklin teller Valerie Kochanski. Samantha, Greendale teller Lynne Marus, and area branch manager Carolyn Lyrenmann also helped out at the event. •••

Kudos: Barb Finnegan
We received the following feedback from Colleen, a satisfied RV loan customer in Pocatello, Idaho:

“I spoke with [customer care supervisor] Barb Finnegan at headquarters five or six times. She is awesome, excellent!”

We couldn’t agree more! Thanks, Colleen, for noticing and taking time to let us know. •••

New Hires for August 23
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.

Oak Creek teller Kenishia Mulero is of Puerto Rican heritage and was born in Trenton, New Jersey. She has lived in Milwaukee for 17 years and previously worked in sales and customer service for furniture retailer Steinhafels. Kenishia likes going to the movies and spending time with her kids, and also enjoys playing volleyball and softball.

Regency teller Zyanya Ordonez is from Racine and was a sales associate for Rogers & Hollands Jewelers before joining North Shore Bank. She is also taking classes at Gateway Technical College; her program of study is Human Services. Zyanya says, “My name is Aztec in origin. While I go by Zee, the pronunciation of my full name is SEE-anyuh. In the phonetics of Nahuatl (the Aztec language family), z is pronounced as an s.” •••

North Shore Shape Up: Oranges may help your eyesight
How’s your vision? If you’re squinting a lot or your optometrist is recommending stronger glasses, you may want to add an orange to your breakfast or lunch every day. Per Cleveland Clinic Wellness:

Among more than 2,000 adults over 50 who were followed for 15 years, researchers found that those whose daily menu included an orange had a more than 60 percent reduced risk of developing age-relation macular degeneration compared with those who didn’t eat oranges. Macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss, affects more than 2 million Americans and has no cure.

Compounds found in oranges known as flavonones help reduce inflammation and fight against oxidation. It’s not clear from the study that they are definitely beneficial for eyesight, but as the clinic notes, there are plenty of other nutritious reasons to eat oranges too. Watch the OJ, though — it’s got a lot of sugar and much less of the healthy fiber found in the whole fruit. •••
