North Shore Shape Up: Study says veggies are good for the gums

We’ve mentioned plenty of times that a diet rich in vegetables is a diet that’s good for your heart and brain. But you don’t often hear that it’s good for your teeth and gums, too. Cleveland Clinic Wellness reports on new research:

In a small clinical study, a group of people with gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) switched to a diet that was low in refined foods and animal protein but high in plant nutrients, omega-3 fats, and fiber. After four weeks of eating this way, they experienced less bleeding in their gums. (A control group, who ate their typical diet, didn’t experience less bleeding than usual.)

The clinic notes that this finding could be related to what we know about heart disease, since both that and gingivitis are usually accompanied by chronic inflammation. Until we know more, though, just consider this one more reason to load up on produce!
