Make a plan with your family for handling weather emergencies

By Pat Ingelse

This is Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin, so here’s a reminder: Especially at this time of year, it is important to talk about weather safety with your family and have a plan for dealing with storms, floods, and other weather emergencies. Here are a few tips:

  • Create an emergency plan with your family and run through it for practice. Know the safest parts of your home and office, and be ready to go there when a tornado warning is issued.
  • Have several ways to receive weather alerts. Radio, local news, and smartphone apps are all important tools.
  • Keep up on the daily forecast.
  • Make sure your mobile device is enabled to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts. (Look under settings or online to learn how.)
  • Create an emergency kit for your home, with supplies such as water, a flashlight and first-aid kit, and critical medicines. Find tips for creating a kit at ReadyWisconsin.

Take a few minutes this week to act on these tips. Your safety and peace of mind are worth it.
