In 1991, a new marketing tactic was put to use by the bank; life-sized cardboard cut-outs of North Shore Bank employees roamed the aisles of Cub Foods stores across Green Bay and Appleton.
At the time, North Shore Bank branches were located in the Cub Food Stores of Green Bay West, Green Bay East and Appleton. North Shore Bank’s Kerri Collins was a manager at one of the bank branches located in Cub Foods at the time and was one of the lucky three employees selected to be the face (literally) of a new advertising campaign for North Shore Bank.
Life-size cardboard cut-outs were all the rage at the time, with the Green Bay Packers own, Brett Favre, popping up everywhere. He was soon rivaled in the Green Bay and Appleton area by Kerri and two of her colleagues at North Shore Bank.
An advertising agency worked with Kerri and her colleagues to organize a photoshoot and create three different cutouts of each person. In each cutout, Kerri and her colleagues had on different outfits and posed differently so that the cutouts could be placed throughout the Cub Foods Stores. They posed in different ways, but their hands were always placed so that they could hold a brochure or rack where promotional materials could be displayed on the cutout itself.
Overnight, Kerri became a local celebrity – with people she didn’t know giving her second looks and asking where they knew her from. Her answer? North Shore Bank and Cub Foods of course!
Some days, Kerri recalls that she would come into the Cub Foods store and her cutout would be missing. After a bit of searching, the cutouts would be found in the oddest of places – from upside down in a shopping cart to hanging out in one of the freezers, the cutouts often had to be hunted down. Mustaches were also often drawn on the cutouts – always in good fun of course!
Because the cutouts often disappeared, the bank eventually did away with them as part of their marketing repertoire. But to this day, Kerri still has her cutout downstairs in her basement, reminding her of when she was a local celebrity to all Cub Foods and North Shore Bank customers in the Green Bay and Appleton communities.
