Employees use Volunteer PTO to rescue horses, chaperone students

Dana Scherff (VP, Information Systems) used her time to volunteer with Riding with Angels during an event with 25 kids from the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center. The kids had the opportunity to tour the barn, meet the animals, play corn hole, eat a delicious BBQ and enjoy a bonfire.

“I started volunteering with Riding with Angels in May 2018 because they needed a lot of volunteers to help with an unplanned delivery of several rescues,” says Dana. “Once I started volunteering, I was hooked. I’m lucky enough to call one of those rescues my horse, Hope.”

Riding with Angels’ two-fold mission not only rescues horses but also helps kids learn life skills including trust, accountability, and patience. Its horsemanship program for youth introduces them to animal care and provides free horse riding lessons.

“I love seeing the kids evolve in the few hours they’re at the barn. Many come in not wanting to feed the horses treats or brush horses…but when they leave, they are hugging the horses, feeding them treats and interacting with them with newfound confidence.”

Additionally, Bilingual Video Teller Erika Garcia recently used her volunteer PTO to chaperone her daughter Itzayana’s 4K class field trip to Cedarburg Creek Pumpkin Farm.

There’s still time to get out there and use your Volunteer PTO before the end of the year! 03092
