NSB employees give thanks for family and friends

Earlier this month, we asked you to tell Shorelines what you were thankful for this year. We’re happy (and thankful!) that some of you took the time to share your thoughtful, funny, and poignant responses, as well as some photos. Congratulations to Lexy Manor, winner of the $25 gas card. And happy Thanksgiving to everyone at North Shore Bank, and all of your loved ones!

A reason to give thanks. Consumer Loan Servicing Specialist Rachel Knitter is recovering after collapsing at her desk from a heart attack two weeks ago. Corporate employees offered support to her, her family, and each other in the wake of the frightening experience, and her supervisor, Joe Fretschel, gave thanks in an email last week.

Kudos

North Shore Bank received thanks from two organizations earlier this month. Next Door thanked us for our donation of 1,698 books, valued at $4,300, to its Books for Kids program. The books will be distributed to Milwaukee children who need them. Pam Edyburn and Debi Schwid of Next Door wrote: “Thank you for helping us in such a meaningful way by investing in the future of our children and supporting Next Door to give Milwaukee’s children and families the skills they need, not just to get by, but to achieve sustainable success.”

And the MACC Fund thanked us for our donation of $800 to fight children’s cancer, from the Information Systems department’s haunted house. MACC Fund executive director John Cary wrote: “Thank you once again for your special gift and for caring for the children. We are proud and grateful to have you on the MACC Fund Team.”

North Shore Shape Up

If you exercise — whatever your fitness level — these five tips will help you burn more calories and push past plateaus. You can read more about them at Health.com.

1. Breathe properly. Proper breathing increases your power when you’re exerting yourself, while holding your breath restricts blood flow to the heart. Inhale on the relaxing part of a rep, and exhale during the actual lift or other exertion.

2. Let the music move you. Research has shown that music takes your mind off the discomfort that can come from working out and helps you exercise at a steadier rhythm. Plus, it’s more fun.

3. Try intervals. Work out extra hard in short bursts. Your muscles will work harder to learn how to cope, and you can reduce the time you spend at the gym.

4. Focus on your weaknesses. Switch up your workout from time to time, and concentrate on the area — cardio, flexibility, core strength — where you most need improvement. Getting better there will help you in other parts of your workout and make you healthier overall.

5. Find a stronger workout partner. You might be intimidated to work out with somebody who’s more fit than you, but it will push you harder.
