North Shore Shape Up

Make morning exercise easier. Like a lot of people, you may have resolved to do a better job of getting up each morning to exercise in 2015. That’s a major change, so make it easier on yourself with the following tips from the Active Times:

  1. Lay out your clothes the night before. It’s one fewer step after you climb out of bed, and an immediate reminder of your good intentions.
  2. Have that coffee. It’s not only safe to drink before exercising, it may also speed up your weight loss and reduce pain.
  3. Put it on the calendar. Treat your morning workouts just like any important appointment from the rest of your life.
  4. Move the alarm clock far away. If you have to get out of bed to turn it off, you’re less likely to hit the snooze button.
  5. Let the sun in. Keep your shades open a bit, so that the morning sunlight streams in; it serves as a natural cue to your body that it’s time to get up. If you get up before sunrise (not uncommon during winter in this part of the world), think about getting a light box and putting it on a timer.
  6. Recalibrate your waking time gradually. If you’re having trouble getting up earlier, turn your alarm back by five minutes every day or two — or even every week — so that you don’t put your body through a drastic change.
  7. Get to bed sooner. Get off the computer, turn off the TV — just shut down those screens at a reasonable hour — and make a concerted effort to be in bed sooner than you’re used to. Even if you’re not exercising in the morning, your body and mind will appreciate it.
  8. Find a friend. Exercising with another person can be a huge motivator. If you know your friend is getting up, too, and will be waiting for you, you’ll feel compelled to get there to meet them.
  9. Be part of a workout community. Take classes and get to know other people at your gym or other workout spot.
  10. Have the right breakfast. Whether you eat it before your workout or after, pick something you like that consists of complex carbohydrates and healthy proteins — like yogurt, oatmeal, fruit, and nuts.
  11. Pick a workout you enjoy. Don’t force yourself into an exercise program you don’t like. Find something that feels good — or, at minimum, that you don’t dread — and go with that. You’re better off consistently doing a lighter workout you enjoy than pushing yourself to do something you don’t like and giving up because it’s no fun.

Fit Friendly Worksite. In December, North Shore Bank was recognized as a Gold Level Recipient of the American Heart Association’s Fit Friendly Worksites Recognition Program. The program is a catalyst for positive change. Workplaces throughout the nation can be part of the initiative by making the health and wellness of their employees a priority. North Shore Bank was recognized for things such as:

• Offering employees physical activity support
• Providing/increasing healthy eating options at the worksite
• Promoting a wellness culture

We are extremely honored to be recognized by the AHA again. The bank has been recognized each year since 2010! Congratulations to all North Shore Bank employees!
