For the 26th consecutive year, our Northland branch had a float in the Appleton Flag Day Parade on June 11. “This is known as the oldest Flag Day parade in the entire nation, and groups from around the country fly in to participate,” says Branch Manager Heather Starr. Employees from Northland and Pulaski participated in the parade, which spanned about 30 city blocks and was also televised. Appleton’s Post-Crescent newspaper estimated that around 80,000 spectators came out for the event. •••

North Shore Shape Up: Omega-3s fight depression?
160616_fishoilIf you take prescription medication for depression, this news is worth knowing. According to Cleveland Clinic Wellness: “More than 40 clinical studies on people with depression have shown that supplementing with fish oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids can substantially boost the effectiveness of antidepressant medication. It appears that the magic is in the omega-3s; research into whether fish oil alone relieves depression yielded conflicting results. If you have ever been diagnosed with depression, talk with your doctor about adding a high-quality fish-oil supplement to your daily regimen.”

Switching to an anti-inflammatory diet may help, too — lots of veggies and whole foods — and regular exercise is also a well-known way to alleviate depression. •••
