MLK Drive employees save customer, Fox6 reports
Employees at our MLK Drive branch recently helped save a customer’s life, as reported in a wonderful story by Milwaukee’s Fox6 News.
Eighty-year-old Sylvester Gorden usually stops in at the branch approximately every two days. But near the end of January, MLK employees hadn’t seen him in some time. They got in touch with his niece, Janice Gorden, and later called Social Services.
When Janice went to check on her uncle, who suffers from blood clots in his lungs, she found him in bad shape and called emergency services to get him into a hospital immediately. He’s in treatment now.
Branch manager Krystynn Taylor told Fox6: “We do form the relationships with the people in our community and make sure that we’re uplifting each other and looking out for each other.” Krystynn said she felt “so relieved” that Sylvester was doing better, thanks to her staff’s concern.
Fox6’s Facebook post of its story — which you can check out on your phone or home computer here — has already received almost 4,000 reactions and almost 100 comments, and been shared over 500 times. •••
Reminder: Get your Milwaukee Public Museum pass
Looking for some indoor activity while the weather is still chilly? Here’s a reminder that North Shore Bank employees can get member-for-a-day passes to the Milwaukee Public Museum.
Passes include admission for two adults and their children or grandchildren (under 17), or one adult and three guests. You can visit the museum’s planetarium and enjoy a member rate on special exhibits, as well as discounts on parking, theater tickets, shopping, and dining.
Here are a few of the things you can do at the museum:
- Tour the museum’s 150,000 square feet of exhibit space to visit Africa, Asia, Europe, the Arctic, South and Middle America, the Pacific Islands, and a Costa Rican rain forest.
- Take a step back in time to the turn-of-the-century “Streets of Old Milwaukee and European Village,” and to ancient Mediterranean civilizations.
- Or take a giant leap back more than 65 million years to “The Third Planet” to see the world’s largest-known dinosaur skull and a life-size replica of Tyrannosaurus rex.
- Stroll amid free-flying butterflies from around the world in the Puelicher Butterfly Wing.
- Check out wonders ranging from the Hebior Mammoth in the museum atrium to the hall of shells in the “Living Ocean” exhibit.
On March 3, a new special exhibit will open and run through July 9: ” Global Kitchen: Food, Nature, Culture.” Pass holders get a discount on tickets and can explore how food is grown, how it reaches our markets and kitchens, how cooks and cultures create cuisines, and the role of food in ceremony and celebration. See cooking demonstrations, sample local delicacies, and even get in on the culinary fun in the working test kitchen. More details here.
Our museum passes expire on March 31, and supplies are limited, so request yours now! To do so, get in touch with corporate receptionist Nancy Hanson, at nhanson@northshorebank.com. If you’re planning a visit, here’s some helpful information. (Photo by Scott Feldstein.) •••

Kudos: Coral Jordan at Grafton
VP and branch sales manager Craig Witz passes along this compliment from a customer:
I would like to share a special appreciation for one individual: Coral Jordan at the Grafton branch. Coral always has a smile on her face, her attitude is always positive, and she always seems to make you feel better just from a conversation with her.
Coral is a personal banker at the branch. Keep up the awesome work, Coral, and thank you! •••
North Shore Shape Up: Beware high blood pressure
“Are you aware that you can have high blood pressure and still feel perfectly healthy?” asks a recent Berkeley Wellness newsletter. Many people with high blood pressure exhibit no symptoms, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous.
About a quarter of all Americans have prehypertension, and full-blown high blood pressure is the number one indicator that a person will suffer a stroke — the fourth-leading cause of death in the U.S. And, Berkeley Wellness adds: “Not only does it increase your risk of stroke, but also of heart disease and heart attacks. And that’s not all: evidence has shown that chronic high blood pressure can contribute to dementia, kidney disease, and vision loss, and it can cause sexual performance issues in both men and women.”
Fortunately, high blood pressure is easy to diagnose and usually easy to treat. Make sure to ask about your blood pressure at your next checkup, and if yours is high, talk with your medical provider about how to lower it. •••
