North Shore Shape Up: Can yoga prevent osteoporosis?

Harvard Health blogs about a 2015 study claiming that practicing yoga could reverse loss of bone density. The upshot: The research doesn’t prove yoga can prevent osteoporosis — except inasmuch as regular yoga improves balance and reduces the risk of falling, a frequent cause of osteoporotic fractures — but the results were promising.

Osteoporosis affects millions of Americans and more women than men. If you don’t exercise regularly, consider adding 15 minutes of yoga to your routine, three or four times a week. Weight lifting is even better, as it has been proven to increase bone density.
