Green Bay East wears pink to fight breast cancer
Green Bay East employees wore pink on October 19 in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “Customers responded really positively,” teller Kari Tuyls reported. “Some shared their stories about having breast cancer or family members or friends who were affected by it.” Kari passed along some facts about the disease:
- Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from it.
- Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1 percent of breast cancers occur in men.
- Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women.
- About 10 percent of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45.
If you haven’t had a mammogram recently, schedule an appointment with your doctor soon! Cancer is much easier to treat when it’s caught early. •••
Daisy Scouts tour Fox Point
Girl Scout Daisy Troop 10625 visited the Fox Point branch on September 21. The girls — first-graders 6 and 7 years old — got a tour from branch manager Carol Bergen.
“I showed them the safe deposit vault, and they got to push on the extremely heavy door,” Carol said. “They used the self-serve coin machine, and we talked about savings and how the bank pays them interest when they save. We also used counterfeit pens on paper and real money.” The Daisies’ visit helped them earn a badge, and a thank-you card arrived from them this week. •••
New Hires for October 26
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.
Investment coordinator Elizabeth Castillo is from the Fond du Lac area and worked for Northwestern Mutual before joining us. Elizabeth is fluent in Spanish and has a 4-month-old son named Elias — her first! “Being a mom is a whole new fun, exciting, crazy experience. But we’re getting through it!” she says.
AVP and assistant controller Ann Marie Krecak has lived in the Milwaukee area her entire life and worked for her whole career in banking, most recently for Park Bank. “I enjoy walking around cemeteries and reading gravestones!” she says. “I try to visit a cemetery in the different places we visit, both in Europe and all over the U.S. My two boys enjoy accompanying me when we travel, much to my husband’s dismay. Most recently, my boys were able to witness and touch the relics of our late Serbian Bishop Mardarije when they were exhumed for his glorification ceremony this past year. Even after being buried for 82 years, his relics were incorrupt.” •••
North Shore Shape Up: Do you have sleep apnea?
You may have heard of sleep apnea, but do you know what its symptoms are? Obstructive sleep apnea — i.e., when you actually stop breathing repeatedly while asleep — affects about 25 percent of all men and about 10 percent of women, and as Cleveland Clinic Wellness points out, it can have serious consequences, including raising your chances of heart attack or stroke. Here are the signs to watch out for:
- Loud and chronic snoring
- Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Restlessness during sleep, frequent nighttime awakenings
- Sudden awakenings with a sensation of gasping or choking
- Dry mouth or sore throat upon awakening
- Cognitive impairment, such as trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, or irritability
- Depression, anxiety, or mood swings
- Morning headaches
If you exhibit some of these symptoms, talk to your doctor. There are solutions for addressing sleep apnea, including CPAP devices, which are now much less intrusive than they used to be. •••
