You may have heard of sleep apnea, but do you know what its symptoms are? Obstructive sleep apnea — i.e., when you actually stop breathing repeatedly while asleep — affects about 25 percent of all men and about 10 percent of women, and as Cleveland Clinic Wellness points out, it can have serious consequences, including raising your chances of heart attack or stroke. Here are the signs to watch out for:
- Loud and chronic snoring
- Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Restlessness during sleep, frequent nighttime awakenings
- Sudden awakenings with a sensation of gasping or choking
- Dry mouth or sore throat upon awakening
- Cognitive impairment, such as trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, or irritability
- Depression, anxiety, or mood swings
- Morning headaches
If you exhibit some of these symptoms, talk to your doctor. There are solutions for addressing sleep apnea, including CPAP devices, which are now much less intrusive than they used to be.
