Your BCP Committee: Prep for winter now
The leaves will be turning that gorgeous golden color soon, and the morning air will be getting a little crisp one of these days. You know the weather reports will be talking about the dreaded winter snowfalls and cold temps soon enough.
While we can handle the cold and snow, all it takes is one storm to knock out power, heat, and communication services for days. At the very least, heavy snowfall and fierce wind can make for a very long drive home. Pat Ingelse shares a few ways to get set for the season — read them now!
McKenna receives prestigious Emu Egg from zoo society
The Zoological Society of Milwaukee presented president and COO Jay McKenna with one of its highest honors, the coveted Emu Egg Award, at a dinner on September 13 at the Milwaukee County Zoo’s Peck Welcome Center.
To receive the Emu Egg, an individual must “demonstrate consistent meritorious service and exceptional contributions to the Zoological Society,” according to the society. Jay has served on the society’s board since 2009 and is part of its Capital Campaign Cabinet, helping get the zoo’s “Adventure Africa” project under way. The project is the first step in a plan to totally transform the zoo over the next two decades.
North Shore Bank has sponsored the zoo’s Safari Train since 2005 and its Family Free Days since 2008. We were also part of this summer’s “Beasties Safari” exhibition.
Senior vice presidents Molly Schissler and Sue Doyle, Jay’s son Christopher, his wife Lisa, his son Patrick, and vice presidents Jude Lengell and Kevin Wilderman, pictured above with Jay, joined him at his table at the awards dinner. •••
Shorewood donates $1,000 to high school
The Shorewood branch recently held a weeklong coin-counting event, inviting customers to bring in their spare change and have it totaled up, and pledging to match up to $1,000 of the counted money with a donation to Shorewood High School through the Shorewood SEED Foundation, which supports the village’s public schools.
“We ended up counting almost $5,000 that week!” reports branch manager Shannon Weber. She’s pictured above presenting Shorewood High principal Tim Kenney with the $1,000 check. •••
North Shore Shape Up: What we know about obesity
Last week, the Huffington Post ran a long, in-depth story about obesity in America and why so many people really struggle with it. Three main points in the story are that dieting, by and large, does not work for most people; that weight is not a reliable indicator of health — it is possible to be fat but healthy or skinny but unhealthy; and that our cultural stigma around fatness takes a terrible emotional toll on people and gets in the way of efforts to live healthfully.
Shorelines regularly shares posts about eating well and weight loss, and this well-reported story provides important context for people interested in those topics. If you can’t access the link, you can download a PDF version here. As ever, whatever your weight, the best health advice is to eat a variety of whole, nutritious foods as often as possible and to move your body on a daily basis. •••
