Here are your spooky stories and happy Halloween memories

We got some fun responses to our call for spooky stories. Here they are — hope each and every one of you has a happy — and not too haunted — Halloween!

When I was around 6 years old, I woke in the middle of the night, and when I opened my eyes I saw people walking out of my closet and gathering around my bed. There were at least 10 of them, and more coming out. I did not recognize any of the faces. I remember vividly cowering under the covers and squeezing my stuffed animal. After a little while, I gained enough courage to peek out of my covers and saw they were gone.

I got out of bed and walked into my parents’ room to ask if I could sleep with them. I had almost made it to my mom when I remembered she had just recently talked to me about how I was too big to sleep in their bed anymore. So I turned around filled with a new resolve to head back to my room. As I walked toward the door to leave their room, I froze as I saw two men in black suits, white shirts, and black ties blocking my way out. When I looked up at their faces, all I could see was darkness. In a quivering voice I said, “I need to wake up Mom.” I quickly woke her up, and she could tell how scared I was and let me sleep with them.

Never again have I experienced such a terrifying night as that. But to this day I still cannot sleep with my closet door open.

Years ago, a friend of mine was at a party, held at a house that was reputed to be haunted. Nobody much cared about that. Many children were running around, all with dark hair and skin, squealing that “the ghost” was after them. Watching the children run past, my friend remarked, “Who is the blond boy?” Others saw the blond boy run past, but no one could find him later.

Years passed, and my daughter happened to be driving past the same house with my grandson Mark, who was 3 at the time. He started telling her how he used to live in the house and the ghost would chase him. Needless to say, my daughter was pretty freaked! (Mark, pictured above in less eerie circumstances, will be 5 in January.)

My favorite scary movie is Alfred Hitchcock’s original version of Psycho. The bleak inhumanity oozing from the depths of Norman Bates’s empty soul has left me on the edge of my seat too many times to count.

And for those too scarrrrreedd to watch it, here’s a fun fact: Hitchcock used chocolate syrup in place of blood in a very particular, deliciously evil scene!

I don’t have a favorite spooky story, but my best Halloween memory is my two grandkids dressed as the main characters from Monsters, Inc. last year. Chase, who was 2 at the time, was Sully; and Rhett, who was 6 months old, was Mike.
