Patty Muehl feels bittersweet about retirement
“Bittersweet” is how Pewaukee branch manager Patty Muehl describes her retirement from North Shore Bank. “It’s a whole new chapter, and it’s going to seem kind of like I’m on vacation! But I’ve really enjoyed my time working here. Everybody has been extremely good to me, and it’s hard to say goodbye.”

Of course Patty — whose last day is tomorrow, Friday, April 26 — will be glad to have more room in her schedule. Noting that her mother is in a memory-care facility, she says, “It is hard to balance things on a day-to-day basis, with work and her care — it just doesn’t seem like there’s enough time to do other things! And I love to be outside in the summertime, so it will be nice to relax a little bit.” Read more about Patty’s plans and her 20-year career with North Shore Bank!

Video teller Garcia explains job to son’s classmates
Earlier this month, bilingual video teller Erika Garcia visited her son Uriel’s 4K class at Shady Lane Elementary in Menomonee Falls to give a presentation about her job at North Shore Bank.

“Each kid has a week when they are the ‘star’ and their parents are encouraged to go in and talk about their jobs and read a book to the class,” said Erika, pictured at right with Uriel. She and her husband, Aldo, visited the class on April 10.

She said she described her job to the children by saying that bank customers “touch the screen in the video teller machine and talk to me, and I can help them.”

A lot of the students had seen ATMs and video teller machines, but not many knew what a bank was, Erika said. “I explained that a bank is like a piggy bank but is a building,” she said. The students also enjoyed the Seymour Savings–branded gifts and other swag she brought along: pencils, coloring books, stickers — “and of course a $5 bill coloring page to hopefully help them open a savings account.” •••

New Hires for April 25
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.

VP business banking Mike Cornell lives in Port Washington and previously worked for Associated Bank. Mike is an avid downhill skier and also snowshoes regularly with his wife. “I ski almost every weekend in the winter in upper Michigan,” he says. “I have season passes at three resorts in the UP – Indianhead, Blackjack, and Ski Brule. It is fun to spend time outdoors with my friends.” •••

North Shore Shape Up: Veggies — good for the gums
We’ve mentioned plenty of times that a diet rich in vegetables is a diet that’s good for your heart and brain. But you don’t often hear that it’s good for your teeth and gums, too. Cleveland Clinic Wellness reports on new research:

In a small clinical study, a group of people with gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) switched to a diet that was low in refined foods and animal protein but high in plant nutrients, omega-3 fats, and fiber. After four weeks of eating this way, they experienced less bleeding in their gums. (A control group, who ate their typical diet, didn’t experience less bleeding than usual.)

The clinic notes that this finding could be related to what we know about heart disease, since both that and gingivitis are usually accompanied by chronic inflammation. Until we know more, though, just consider this one more reason to load up on produce! •••
