Green Bay Gamblers collect caps, money for cancer

The popular Green Bay Gamblers hockey team played its sixth annual North Shore Bank-sponsored Caps for Cancer fundraising game on Saturday, Oct. 23.

In addition to donating ticket sale, silent auction, raffle and pink-jersey auction proceeds of $6,450 to Heavenly Hats and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center Clinic at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, the Gamblers went one step further: They gathered two days before the game to have their heads shaved, symbolizing that they stand with cancer patients who often lose their hair during treatment. Regional Vice President Tricia Cravillion joined staff from Sports Clips in shaving players’ heads for the cameras.

North Shore Bank customer Karla Gunnlauggsson of Green Bay, a breast cancer survivor, represented the bank for the honorary puck drop. When the Gamblers scored their first goal, fans tossed a record 2,872 new caps in sealed plastic bags onto the ice. The collected caps went to Heavenly Hats, an organization that provides caps to cancer patients nationwide.

A teen form Howard, Wis., started Heavenly Hats 12 years ago. It now has donated over 12,200 caps nationwide.

The local fundraising total includes $1,500 from Suamico Elementary School donated from its own hat auction and $25 from Valley View Elementary School.
