ONE MINUTE OF MINDFULNESS

Take a moment to reassert your sense of control
Many of us have an unhealthy habit or behavior that really affects our life. But we can change that. We are attached to our habits, but we begin to end these attachments as soon as we become aware of them and their hold on us.

Try this meditation for one minute every day, or longer if you want to:

WHEN I HAVE COME TO THE END OF MY ROPE, when I feel out of control, I need only put down my foot and say, “This will be no more.” I have the power to begin and to end, to say yes and to say no.

This meditation was adapted from A Mindful Day: 365 Ways to Live Life With Peace, Clarity, and an Open Heart, by David Dillard-Wright. How did it go for you? Share your thoughts and feelings in Shorelines and you’ll be entered to win a copy of the book!

If you would like a FREE daily email reminder to do one minute of mindfulness, email us with the subject line “Mindfulness reminder.” •••

HEALTHY YOU

Men face greater health risks, but can change that

Click the graphic for a PDF explaining what health screenings men need to get and when.

“Compared to women, men are more likely to drink alcohol or use tobacco, make riskier choices in both work and their personal life, and forgo routine checkups,” says an article in the latest issue of Healthy You, from UMR. But all is not lost. “Many of the major health risks that men face today can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, not smoking, stress reduction, and moderate alcohol consumption (no more than two drinks a day). Regular checkups and screening tests can spot disease early, when it’s easiest to treat.”

The article offers valuable information on health issues including cardiovascular and respiratory disease, cancer, diabetes, and depression, sharing some of their specific impacts on men. Read it here! •••
