While common, depression is a serious mental-health condition that can adversely affect someone’s quality of life — and that of the people around them, as well. And it’s more than just sadness, as this month’s update from UMR notes: “While everyone feels sad at times, many times the feeling will pass within a few days. When these feeling persist for at least two weeks, a person may be suffering from depression. And, while people often think of sadness as a sign of depression, being irritable or very tired also may be symptoms of depression, especially in men.”
Among other things, men who are depressed are more likely than women to feel irritable and short-tempered, to experience physical pain, and to find it difficult to be productive at work. Unfortunately, men are also more likely to brush off or ignore symptoms of depression. Take a look at this PDF to learn more about the symptoms of depression in men and what to do if you suspect someone you know is suffering from depression.
