Beyond the balance sheet: Keeping North Shore Bank healthy

You have heard me say it time and again: “You are the bank.” I firmly believe that the people of North Shore Bank have shaped our success. Especially during these turbulent economic times, you have all worked tirelessly — individually and as a team — to maintain a strong and healthy bank.

Just as we care about our bank’s financial performance for the communities we serve, we care about the health and wellness of our employees — the heart and soul of North Shore Bank.

Our personal health affects many areas of our lives. It impacts our energy and motivation to work, to focus and be productive, and to enjoy activities outside of the workplace.

Our health also affects us financially. According to a new study from actuarial firm Milliman Inc., the average annual cost of health insurance for a typical American family of four with an employer-sponsored health insurance plan in 2012 has risen to $20,728, up more than seven percent from last year. This rise in health insurance premiums not only affects the bank’s performance; it affects our pocketbooks, since we personally contribute part of the cost.

A number of factors account for the cost increases, some of which are out of our control. But according to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 75 percent of health care costs are due to chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Lifestyle habits that include healthy eating, exercise and not smoking, help to reduce the instances of these chronic conditions.

Because we care about your health and the quality of your work environment, North Shore offers a number of wellness programs and workout classes to support you in your efforts to maintain a healthy lifestyle. There are Pilates and Zumba classes, the 10-week “U Walk” team initiative, and The Biggest Loser contest, to name a few.

Please take advantage of these great programs. Share ideas and feedback with Lynn Jack, our wellness coordinator, about how we can better support you and your colleagues as you strive to achieve your goals.

I personally can attest to the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle, including more energy to work and keep up (whew) with my high-speed grandkids!

But don’t listen to me – listen to North Shore employee Jay Guzzetta, who found the inner motivation to change his lifestyle, eat for health and lose an incredible 92 pounds!

What most impresses me about Jay is that he wasn’t looking for a quick fix. He had a long-term vision for regaining his health, and through daily positive habits he realized his goal. Jay took control of his life, and he’s happier and healthier for it. Please join me in congratulating Jay and drawing inspiration from what he has accomplished as we seek our own personal best in health and wellness.

As a bank family, let’s encourage and support one another. Catch up with a colleague over a lunchtime walk or jog, trade healthy recipes, organize a U Walk team. Support one another during setbacks — we all have them.

And don’t forget to celebrate both big AND small successes. On some days, a simple high-five and “Way to go!” is the little boost we need to keep going.

You are the bank. Let’s work individually and collectively to keep North Shore Bank healthy.

Best wishes to everyone for an active, fun-filled summer.

I have a great team here at Oak Creek that have been very supportive and it has been an honor to be mentioned by Mr. McKenna. It is true that I have much more energy these days and looking forward to this new life full of energy and activity!
