Grafton branch Lead Teller Aradonis Nusberger recently used her volunteer PTO to accompany her son Jaxson’s class on a field trip to the state Capitol in Madison.
The visit to the Capitol is a staple for many fourth-grade classes in Wisconsin.
Aradonis said the day started at the Capitol with a tour that explored the building’s rich history. The tour focused on the history and symbolism of many paintings and sculptures. “The kids were super excited to learn that more than 200 Badgers are depicted throughout the Capitol in either paintings or sculptures,” she said.
In the State Assembly room, they met State Representatives Darrin Madison and Paul Melotik, who explained what members of the assembly do. The students spoke to the representatives about a new bill designed to give kids in Wisconsin more recess during the school day.
After the Capitol tour, they visited Camp Randall. “My group of fourth-grade boys was so excited about this part of the tour!” she said.
Here are a few fun facts Aradonis and the class learned:
- The stadium seats 75,000 people.
- The student section tickets sell out (on average) in 45 minutes.
- When the crowd starts the traditional “Jump Around” during each game, the stadium shifts almost half an inch. The first time “Jump Around” happened in Camp Randall was in 1997, and it registered as an earthquake at the nearby Department of Geoscience!
- Bucky Badger’s real name is Buckingham, no relation to the King.
