I am a huge book nerd, so you will often see me use my lunch hour to escape to another life in another world through reading. Since I read so often, I have a ton of favorites, but The Murderer’s Daughters, by Randy Susan Meyers, is one I’ve recently enjoyed. It explores the minds of two sisters who witnessed their father murdering their mother; they both have severely different viewpoints, and the story really makes you think. Lately, I’ve also been into the more racy novels by Sylvia Day. They offer a lot of psychological intrigue and are well written and well thought out. As an author, Day really looks into the issues of self-confidence that we’ve all faced at some point, and she provokes you to re-examine them from a different, more positive angle. Finally, a classic favorite is Valley of the Dolls, by Jacqueline Susann. As a women’s studies major, this was required reading for me — and it was so interesting that I must say it should be a required read for everyone.

I would recommend She Said Yes: The Unlikely Martyrdom of Cassie Bernall, by Misty Bernall. Cassie René Bernall was a student killed in the Columbine High School massacre at age 17. Her mother, Misty, wrote the book describing her daughter’s turbulent teenage life and spiritual conversion. Initial reports suggested that shooter Eric Harris asked Cassie if she believed in God moments before killing her. It was believed she answered yes, leading to the story that Cassie died as a martyr.
