The leaves will be turning that gorgeous golden color soon, and the morning air will be getting a little crisp one of these days. That means one of two things: Either you’re really ready for some football or the weather forecasters will be talking about the dreaded winter snowfalls and cold temps. I can hear the groans already!
While we can handle the cold and snow, all it takes is one storm to knock out power, heat, and communication services for days. Heavy snowfall and bitter cold can make for a very long drive home, at the very least. And what — no cable TV?
Now is the time to start preparing for Old Man Winter by:
- Checking your car battery
- Assembling a winter emergency kit for the car (blanket, flashlight, fresh batteries, flare)
- Changing the batteries in your smoke alarm when you “fall back” on November 1
It’s also a good time to talk with your family about what to do if the power goes out this winter. We don’t have a problem remembering to watch the news for closings — but what should your family do if a heavy snow knocks out the power to your house or your heat? Take a few minutes to talk through a plan. A little preparation goes a long way when it’s a cold and snowy winter!
And remember: The only thing more difficult than planning will be explaining to your family why you didn’t. Good luck!
