Community-Minded: Sussex’s Candy Walecki makes life brighter through Lioness Club

Ten years ago, Sussex Branch Manager Candy Walecki made a business-related decision that would have big implications for the rest of her life. “North Shore Bank was new to Sussex, so I joined the local chamber of commerce and the Lioness Club to volunteer in the community and network,” she says of that fateful moment in 2006. Regular Shorelines readers know that Candy’s involvement with both groups has continued apace ever since. She has served as president of the Lioness Club, is currently on the club’s board, and routinely gives her time and energy to the club’s events and activities. Read more about her volunteer efforts here.

Dash for Cash: On Jan 23, 21 teachers raced to collect as many $1 bills as they could from the center of the Green Bay Gamblers’ ice rink. Between their efforts and ticket sales, North Shore Bank helped raise $9,197 for Wisconsin schools by sponsoring the Dash for Cash. Here’s a list of participating schools. The next Dash for Cash will take place March 19.

Grafton book sale: Our Grafton branch is holding a book sale through Feb 29 to benefit the Adult Literacy Center of Ozaukee County. Books will sell for 25¢ or 50¢, and proceeds will go to purchase workbooks, reading books, and testing materials for the center’s students. If you know someone in the neighborhood who could use a good book, send them over!

North Shore Shape Up

Are you too nice? It may seem counterintuitive, but while being agreeable is generally a desirable quality in a person, you can have too much of a good thing. As Psychology Today notes, highly agreeable people “might also try hard to avoid conflict and confrontation.” Conflict avoidance is a strong sign of trouble later on, as problems build up and aren’t addressed until they reach a boiling point. And in a workplace situation, “[b]ecause no one will argue with anyone else, [a] highly agreeable team could actually perform less successfully than a team with at least one dissenter.”
