Race for the Hungry brings in food for charities in eighth year

Allouez branch manager Mickey Adams’s niece Melissa and friend Colin raced against teller Olivia Vechart and ABMS Will Roberts at the Pick ’n Save housing our Green Bay East branch.

North Shore Bank hosted our eighth annual Race for the Hungry events at grocery stores within our communities on December 27. These races engage participants in a head-to-head competition to support local food pantries and win free groceries.

Races took place at Pick ’n Save in Green Bay, Piggly Wiggly in Howard, Festival Foods in Kenosha, and El Rey Foodmart in Milwaukee. Total value of the food gathered in each race breaks down as follows:

  • Pick ’n Save — $352.33
  • Piggly Wiggly — $514.88
  • Festival Foods — $465.22
  • El Rey Foodmart — $537.22

Food collected and donations from the Green Bay and Howard events went to the Trinity Lutheran Church pantry and the Giving Tree. In Kenosha, collections and donations went to the Shalom Center. And El Rey collections and donations went to the Milwaukee Christian Center.

At left, Renee and Katie — both Howard-Suamico School District speech language pathologists — raced for the Autism Society of Northeastern Wisconsin at Olsen’s Piggly Wiggly. At right, Peggy (a Howard-Suamico School District teacher mentor) and Diane (a volunteer and community involvement coordinator for the district) raced for the Giving Tree.

The winning racers won $100 grocery gift cards, while runners-up won $50 gift cards. Bank employees and participants donated their gift cards and made other donations to other groups, as well, including Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay, the Bay Area Humane Society, and the Autism Society of Northeastern Wisconsin.

Race for the Hungry got some nice news coverage, too. Here’s a smattering:
