From HR: Job shadow program going strong
Since launching our job shadow program in October 2015, we’ve had over 35 employees take part (and some have attended more than two!). After their shadow experience, we ask participants to provide some feedback in a brief survey. On a scale of 1 to 5 (where 5 represents the highest rating), the average rating is 4.76.
Molly Schissler shares some participants’ comments and a little more information about this popular and growing program. Find out more here!

Lake in the Hills does business at grill-out
The community grill-out hosted by our Lake in the Hills branch on June 2 drew a steady stream of traffic and won us some business, too, district manager Brian Bozek said.
“Branch manager James Shook and his team did a marvelous job generating traffic for this event,” Brian said. “They had a steady stream of foot traffic throughout the day, and it was really great to see families coming over to have a bite to eat and learn about Illinois State Bank.” The event yielded at least one new checking account.
The grill-out supported Algonquin Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry and brought in three crates of food. Visitors could also purchase Italian ices to support the Tri-Cities Little League; the players raised $85.
Employees who helped out with the grill-out and at the branch during the event include teller supervisor Dawn Conley, teller Paige John, assistant branch manager–sales Tanya Stoutemire, teller supervisor Blanca Wiley, and teller Teresa Wojciechowski. •••
Kids Day Fox Valley draws 800
Around 800 people attended this year’s Kids Day Fox Valley, hosted by our Menasha branch on May 6. Of those 800 attendees, about 425 were kids who registered for a chance to win a bike.
“We raised enough donations from local businesses to cover the cost of 32 bikes, two bounce houses, and other entertainment like the DJ and jugglers and balloon artists,” reported assistant branch manager–operations Jill Heule. Check out more information and photos from the event!
Promotions for May 2017
The following employees were promoted in May:

New Hires for June 8
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.
Muskego personal banker Brannan Hood was born and raised in Sandusky, Ohio. He’s worked in banking for nearly 13 years, most recently as a branch manager for PNC Bank. He also recently did a stint as a security shift supervisor for Rockwell Automation. “People would probably be surprised to learn I’m an avid skydiving enthuasiast!” Brannan says. “It’s a hobby I picked up while serving in the Marine Corps.” His highest altitude so far has been 18,500 feet, with a full suit and oxygen mask.
Southwest teller Nicole Ndanda was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but lived in South Africa until 2010. “The main thing I’ve noticed since moving to Wisconsin is how here, people are more to themselves and minding their own business. Back home, everyone knew each other, everyone would be outside talking and laughing — but here, people are in their houses and you barely know your neighbor,” she says. “And the other thing is definitely the weather! For people who had never seen snow before, it took my family and I a while to adjust.” Nicole previously worked for an after-school program called PeppNation Sports Leadership Camps. She speaks Swhahili, English, Lingala, and French.
Allouez teller Kari Tuyls was born and raised in Green Bay and previously worked as first assistant manager at Maurices clothing retailer. She has a 1½-year-old son named Casstiel and can wiggle her ears. “I don’t remember when I discovered I could do that!” Kari says. “I know I was pretty young — maybe 7 or so.” •••
Jazmin Vela graduates, thanks mentors for support
Wauwatosa teller Jazmin Vela graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on May 21 with a degree in finance. Branch manager Mary Rose Balzer and personal banker Ray Guardiola joined her other friends and family for a party after the ceremony. “My support team throughout the past four years gathered for food, cake, drinks, and mingling,” Jazmin said. “It’s been one of the best days of my life thus far. I am still on cloud nine.”
She says the reality of her achievement still hasn’t quite hit her, but that she’s feeling “a huge sense of pride and purpose.”
Jazmin wants to thank two of her mentors: “Mary Rose hired me right when I was starting my educational career with no banking experience, and throughout the years, she showed me how to improve and grow at my position. She was patient and accommodating to my school needs, which was important with trying to find a balance in my life. It made going to school full time and working part time a piece of cake!” she says. “And Jennie Schlei was my supervisor for almost three years and really showed me the ropes at a job that was all new to me when I started. I admire her work ethic, and she was also patient and accommodating to me when she was at the branch level. They both are the reason I wanted to stay at North Shore Bank long-term.” •••
North Shore Shape Up: Hate exercise? Up the intensity
Do you get bored and frustrated every time you start an exercise routine? If so, give high-intensity interval training a try. Harvard Medical School cites a recent study that found that HIT (or HIIT, as it’s also called) “is more enjoyable than moderate continuous aerobic exercise, and thus may help you stick with your workouts.”
In the study, 40 sedentary adults were divided into two groups, with each doing stationary bike workouts, three days a week. The HIT group did 10 bouts of one-minute high-intensity intervals at 90% to 95% of peak heart rate, followed by a one-minute recovery, for 20 minutes. The other half did moderate intensity cycling at 70% to 75% peak heart rate continuously for about 28 minutes.
After six weeks, the HIT group had a 10% higher overall exercise enjoyment score than the moderate-intensity group. Also, the HIT group’s score increased weekly and peaked by the end, while the moderate intensity group’s score stayed stagnant throughout.
Besides that, the HIT group got quite a bit stronger, too. There’s a lot of information about high-intensity interval training online. Give it a look, and you might be on the way to a fitter self faster. •••
