Learn more about Alzheimer’s next Tuesday
Save the date! Corporate will host an informative discussion regarding memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease next Tuesday, September 19. Tim Harrington, development coordinator with the Alzheimer’s Association, will lead the presentation.

The conversation takes place from 11 a.m. to noon in the Presentation Room. Employees at other locations can call in for the discussion. A conference number will be provided closer to the presentation date.

Every 66 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s — as a result, an increasing number of baby boomers will need to balance work and caregiving to family members with some type of memory loss. Tuesday’s discussion will cover the differences between memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s, as well as risk factors, treatment, and the steps toward a proper diagnosis.

The Alzheimer’s Association is a wonderful resource not only for those diagnosed with some type of memory loss, but also for their caregivers. Please consider attending this presentation.

Take advantage of Weight Watchers Deal Days
Great news! We have reached the middle of our current Weight Watchers At Work Meeting series, and Weight Watchers has another early-renewal special for employees who want to continue making healthy changes and renew their membership, or who want to join as a new member.

It’s a discount called Deal Days. Deal Days are offered during a special window closing tomorrow, September 15. We only need your commitment at this point. The new session of Weight Watchers At Work will start in October.

For a 12-week series, if you renew or join during the Deal Days window, you will pay only $132.60 (regular $156). This is a 15% discount! Payroll deduction is available, too, for easy payments.

If you are at a branch, you may sign up through the Corporate At Work group and then attend a Weight Watchers meeting in your area, at your convenience.

If you are at Corporate, you may attend a free meeting tomorrow, Friday, September 15, at 11 a.m. in the Lower Level Lounge to learn more.

Contact Nancy Hanson if you have questions or are interested in this special rate. •••

North Shore Shape Up: Does ginger ale help?
Many of us are used to drinking ginger ale to help alleviate an upset stomach. But does it really help? Berkeley Wellness notes:

Studies have found that ginger and ginger extracts can be effective for alleviating some types of nausea and vomiting, such as that related to pregnancy and following surgery, attributed to compounds, called gingerols, which may have anti-inflammatory and other soothing effects in the gastrointestinal tract. Doses used in studies have ranged from 250 milligrams to 1 gram, taken one to four times a day.

However, there’s much research supporting the medicinal benefits of ginger ale. “While some major brands of ginger ale, such as Canada Dry, do actually contain ginger extract (listed as “natural flavors” on the label), soda manufacturers won’t reveal the exact amounts — which are likely to be quite small — since it is considered proprietary information,” Berkeley Wellness says.

The upshot: Ginger ale may make you feel better because you have good memories of it helping when you were younger, but it’s quite possibly all in your head. You may be better off with a cup of ginger tea. •••
