North Shore Shape Up: Put away your phone — and get happier!

In health news that probably won’t surprise anyone, Cleveland Clinic Wellness reports on research that has found that smartphone usage can have a negative impact on our emotions:

[M]ore than 300 people were randomly assigned to have their phones on the table or put away while dining with friends and family, and were then surveyed about their experience. Those who put their phones away experienced less distraction, more enjoyment, and even less boredom than those who had their phones out. Another study showed the same pattern in other settings, with participants enjoying their interactions more if they hadn’t used their phones in the previous 15 minutes.

It can be hard to disconnect, but making the effort to do so when you’re with family and friends is a good idea. Give it a try and declare meals, family gatherings, and similar events “no-phone zones” where you can focus on the people in front of you.
