Winning team at Northland enjoys breakfast, costumes

On Tuesday, some Appleton Northland employees put on costumes to prepare and serve breakfast to their colleagues.

“We split the branch staff into two teams during the bank’s HELOC promotion and held a contest to see which team could have the most HELOC conversations and get the most referrals,” branch manager Heather Starr said. “The runners-up made breakfast for the winners, while wearing costumes! We had a lot of fun with it.”

Carter runs strong at Ice Age Trail
Here’s an update: Customer assistance specialist Sara Carter placed 145th out of 325 finishers in another 50-mile race, the Ice Age Trail competition, on May 12. Her time was 10 hours, 32 minutes, and 33 seconds. Sara came in ninth out of 22 in her age division and 28th out of the 98 women who ran.

“The race went well,” she says. “Weather was perfect. The course was a lot more challenging than my first 50-miler — the terrain was more technical single-track, with more hills! Nutrition was a little bit more difficult, due to aid stations being spaced out differently. I am so grateful that my body once again carried me the distance of 50-ish miles without any major issues.”

There was only one hitch: “My watch I’m not so happy with!” Sara says. “It decided to die with about six miles to go, so that was mentally a little challenging. I have recovered and I’m already training for my next race!” •••

Colleagues throw party for Jewell Graham’s wedding

Consumer loan specialist Jewell Graham got married on Memorial Day, and his colleagues threw him a small party today with cake.

“I’m not sure why we picked Memorial Day,” Jewell says. “I just told my fiancée, Hannah, three things: Tell me when the cake tasting is, tell me when the food tasting is, and tell me when to show up to marry you.”

He described the party here as “amazing.” “I am truly thankful to have the co-workers I have,” Jewell says. “The fifth floor at Corporate is the best. I truly appreciate what they did — especially the cake. It was special.” Congratulations, Jewell and Hannah! •••

North Shore Shape Up: Need more sleep? Probably.
Too many Americans fail to get enough sleep — and that has serious consequences for our health. Harvard Health notes that as “sleep debt mounts, the health consequences increase, putting us at growing risk for weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and memory loss.”

To combat sleep debt, you need to embrace healthy sleep practices. Harvard Health recommends creating a “sleep sanctuary” free of distractions like TVs or your computer or phone. Avoid napping unless absolutely necessary, as well as caffeine after noon. Don’t drink too much alcohol. Get exercise during the day, too. If you’re following all of these guidelines and still having trouble with sleep, talk to your doctor.

When you build up a sleep debt, it negatively impacts your immune system, reaction time, and memory, among other things. Note too that in a study of student volunteers who slept only four or six hours a night, the participants got worse at recognizing how sleepy they actually were over time.

The good news is, you can address your sleep debt gradually over time. If it’s a fairly short-term sleep debt, Harvard Health suggests: “If you missed 10 hours of sleep over the course of a week, add three to four extra sleep hours on the weekend and an extra hour or two per night the following week until you have repaid the debt fully.” If your sleep debt has been going on longer, you may consider taking some time off to recoup your lost zzz’s. •••
