Benefits U: Is a 401k loan really worth it?
This week, we’re excited to introduce Benefits U, a new program from Human Resources aimed at educating North Shore Bank employees about — you guessed it — your benefits. Look for Benefits U articles, webinars, seminars, and more on the way, all marked with the handy Seymour logo seen here. We’re kicking things off today with a look at 401k loans, and whether taking one out is a good idea for you.

If you’re in a pinch and need money, you may be thinking about a 401k loan. Borrowing money from your retirement savings can seem like an attractive idea when you need it now. But while it is your money, you should consider a few things before tapping into your retirement account. Read on to learn more!

NSB-branded baseballs equal fun for Chinooks fans

North Shore Bank sponsored Autograph Night last Wednesday, July 18, at the Lakeshore Chinooks baseball game in Mequon. Area branch manager Farrah Mason (pictured above) and her Grafton and Mequon employees handed out 750 North Shore Bank–branded baseballs to fans in attendance, who lined up after the game for the Northwoods League players to sign them.

One bank customer also won a contest to throw out the first pitch of the game. “He did better than I did last year,” Farrah said, laughing. “He made it over the plate!”

We sponsored a Chinooks Autograph Night last year, too. Pictured above are Grafton assistant branch manager–operations Donna Billmann, Mequon universal banker Megan Butler, Farrah, teller Doug Tuhro, Grafton teller Caroline Holzer, and assistant branch manager–sales Lizzy Lustig. Personal banker Coral Jordan also helped out. •••

Kenosha Main teller Kelsey Foertsch is from Kenosha and previously worked as a manager for Papa John’s. She says, “Thanks to my previous job, I can spin pizza dough in the air — and actually catch it!” Kelsey is also a former swim team member and was a lifeguard for Kenosha’s public pools. •••

Lanting, grandson visit zoo dinos

Senior mortgage loan originator Pam Lanting took her 3-year-old grandson Greyson to the Milwaukee County Zoo last Friday, July 20. As you can see from the photo above, they went to see the zoo’s dinosaur exhibit. “We rode the zoo Safari Train, too, and when we got off, we also saw the bank’s Beastie,” Pam said. •••

North Shore Shape Up: Lower blood sugar with lentils
If you need to get a handle on your blood sugar — because letting it get too high can increase your risk of diabetes and issues with insulin resistance — Cleveland Clinic Wellness has a simple tip: Replace the rice and potatoes you normally enjoy at dinnertime with lentils. The clinic notes:

In a recent study, replacing half a portion of either rice or potatoes with lentils was shown to lower blood sugar by 20 percent or 35 percent, respectively. Lentils are chock full of fiber, which slows down the release of sugar into the bloodstream.

The clinic advises: “If you’re new to lentils, experiment with common varieties, such as green, brown, split red or yellow, French, and black lentils. You can also enjoy various varieties of beans, cousins of lentils that have similar properties. When you do eat rice, choose fiber-rich brown rice, and as for potatoes, eat the nutrient-and fiber-rich skin, too.” Happy eating! •••
