After 20 busy years, Wendy Gyles prepares to retire
Electronic banking AVP Wendy Gyles has played a major role in North Shore Bank’s evolution over the course of her career here, which hits the 20-year mark this week. A pivotal figure in developing our debit channel, she notes that most people have no idea how complex that system is, even as debit cards have become an essential part of everyday life.

“People depend more and more on their debit cards nowadays. They don’t realize what goes on behind the scenes,” says Wendy, who is now preparing for retirement at the end of September. She talked to Shorelines about her career and what’s next. Read on to see what she says!

Kenosha Festival Foods spreads the word

Our Kenosha Festival Foods branch has been busy building a relationship with the store and making sure shoppers there are aware of our presence, reports area branch manager Julie Goebel. Universal banker Rodney Whiteside recently treated them to some delicious bacon cheese spread with crackers while advertising our latest checking promotion. “Rodney had quite a ‘Gouda’ time explaining how we could help them save ‘cheddar’ with this ‘grate’ deal,” Julie joked. Here’s hoping customers keep enjoying these promotions and “Edam” up! •••

New Hires for August 2
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.

Grafton teller Jenna Piquette is from Germantown and worked as a nanny before joining the team at North Shore Bank. “I have six sisters and one brother,” she says. “I am the seventh child, and since many of my siblings are now married, I have 17 nieces and nephews! Having a big family is lots of fun, and I love our many family gatherings!”

Our new facilities and services manager, Tim Dotson, has lived in the greater Milwaukee area all his life and lives in Brookfield now. He has handled facility management for many cool places over the past 20-plus years, including Harley-Davidson’s headquarters and its museum, Miller Park, and properties of real estate developer Irgens. “I play sax and sing in local area bands, including 10 fun years with Cold Sweat and the Brew City Horns,” Tim adds. “I also enjoy performance driving and have been competing in AutoCross events at Miller Park for many years, and am now learning to drive on larger road courses like Road America.” •••

North Shore Shape Up: Low-fat or low-carb?
What’s better — low-fat or low-carb? If dieting has been a part of your life, you probably know that’s the question that’s plagued people trying to lose weight and get healthier. Well, now we have a better answer — sort of — than ever before. Berkeley Wellness reports on a huge new clinical trial from Stanford University comparing healthy low-fat diets to healthy low-carb diets.

The study’s findings were almost anticlimactic:

[T]here was no clear winner, and contrary to expectations, genetics and insulin sensitivity didn’t predict who would fare best on each diet. The good news: Both healthy diets produced similar moderate weight loss that was sustained for a year, and both were designed so that people could follow them for the rest of their lives.

On average, members of the two groups in the trial lost 12 or 13 pounds, and members of both reduced their calorie intake over time. Berkeley Wellness notes that “they weren’t instructed to cut calories — it just happened when they focused on high-quality foods that satisfied their hunger.”

Researchers also did genetic testing on study participants and measured their insulin levels, and they hope to learn more about how those factors influence a particular diet’s effectiveness for individuals. In the meantime, your best bet is to fret less about whether to go low-fat or low-carb, and just have lots of veggies; cut way back on added sugar and refined grains; and eat whole, unprocessed foods as often as possible. •••
