Gagliano completes Graduate School of Banking
For most people, August means getting ready to go back to school. But Kristen Gagliano celebrated completing her studies at the Graduate School of Banking earlier this month.

“It was an amazing program that exposed me to so many more areas of the bank,” says Kristen, vice president, BSA and compliance, of the 25-month program run through UW-Madison. “It allowed me to better understand the broader impact of the decisions made across the organization, and the leadership courses gave me insight into ways we can all improve our management skills.”

Kristen saw attending the school as an opportunity to get a better handle on some essential areas of banking, like credit and finance. “These areas are so critical to the strength and success of every bank,” she says. “I’ve always known they were important, but I have a renewed respect for them now.” Read more about her achievement and what the Graduate School of Banking offers.

5th Floor East wins CCOC’s school-supply collection

Earlier this month, the Corporate Community Outreach Committee organized a school supply collection competition that resulted in 118 well-stocked backpacks, another box of supplies, and $51 in cash donations. The 5th Floor East team (Processing, Closing, Underwriting, and Commercial Collections) filled 28 backpacks to win the challenge — and a sundae bar. See more photos from the collection challenge!

Shorewood celebrates 95 years with birthday party

Our Shorewood branch celebrated its — and by extension, all of North Shore Bank’s — 95th birthday with a party on Saturday, August 11.

“It was such an exciting and fun day,” said area branch manager Shannon Weber. “We could not believe how fast the time went by. We had so many people stop in to say happy birthday, grab some cake, and check out the new branch.” See more photos from the day!

New Hires for August 30
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.

Brookfield Capitol teller Lisa Gerwitz moved to Wisconsin in June, from Possum Trot, Kentucky, after her husband was called to pastor Southside Baptist Church in West Allis. She was previously a teller at Regions Bank. “Spending time with my four grandkids is the highlight of my life!” Lisa says. One grandchild lives in West Virginia; the other three moved to Brazil last week. She also loves to play piano, collect cookbooks, and bake — her specialties include chocolate-chip cheesecake and coffee cake. •••

North Shore Shape Up: Don’t overdo heartburn meds
If you suffer from heartburn (also known as acid reflux), medication can be an incredible relief. Proton-pump inhibitor (or PPI) medications are one common treatment and include popular brands such as Prilosec (omeprazole), Prevacid, and Nexium. But PPIs are not an ideal long-term solution, as Cleveland Clinic Wellness warns:

These drugs are extremely effective, but taking them long-term raises your risk for a laundry list of serious health woes, including heart attacks, infections, brittle bones, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s, and even an early death. If you’ve been taking PPIs for more than a few weeks, make an appointment with your physician to determine whether you still need it and to create a treatment plan.

That said, the clinic also notes that you should not stop taking PPIs cold turkey, as that can induce intense “rebound heartburn” that sends you running for your medication again. The best ways to ward off reflux over the long haul are “by losing weight if you need to, eating small meals, avoiding foods that trigger indigestion (such as citrus, peppers, fried foods, garlic, caffeine, and alcohol), allowing for at least three hours between dinner and bedtime, and propping up the head of your bed at night.” •••
