After nearly 20 years of learning, Heinrich retiring
Nearly two decades of learning on the job will come to a close next week, when ACH recon specialist Linda Heinrich retires on October 25.
“I’ve been very fortunate to have people around me who took me seriously when I said I was ready to learn something new,” says Linda, who started in April 1999 and worked in deposit services, customer assistance, and checking before joining the ACH team in 2011. “I’d get to a point where I’d learn a job, and I’d enjoy doing it, but I’d tell myself, ‘There’s gotta be more to learn,'” she says. “That’s just the type of person I am.” Read more about Linda’s retirement and her future plans!
What’s your favorite spooky story?
Halloween is almost upon us! In honor of all the ghosts, ghoulies, and fun, tell Shorelines what your favorite spooky or scary story is. Here’s how it works:
- Pick your favorite story — it can be a ghost story, TV episode, horror movie, or even a personal memory from Halloweens gone by. (If it’s more sweet or funny than terrifying, that’s just fine.) Make sure you share a few words about why it’s your favorite, too.
- Send the information to shorelines@northshorebank.com. Make sure to include your name, current job title, and branch or department.
- Deadline is noon on Tuesday, October 23.
We’ll run everyone’s answers next week to help you get in the right frame of mind for the eerie festivities! Email if you have questions — we don’t respond to Ouija boards. 👻 •••
Bank shows support for Brewers
North Shore Bank employees demonstrated their support for the Milwaukee Brewers — currently battling the Los Angeles Dodgers to win this year’s NL Championship Series and move on to the World Series — by wearing the baseball team’s attire last Friday, October 12. Employees also gave over $400 to the Milwaukee Brewers Community Foundation. There will be another chance to contribute if they wish, and to show support for the team with a Brewers wear and jeans day tomorrow, Friday, October 19.
Above are employees from Loan Administration and Underwriting who dressed up for the day. In front are Dan Truss, Priscilla Hartling, Yvette Jankowski, JoEllen Brisk, and Cathy Swanson. Behind them are John Goman, Davida Zollicoffer, Laura Habighorst, Jeff Wagner, and Keith Goetter. •••
About 50 people visit Sussex for Fall Celebration
The 12th annual Sussex Fall Celebration took place at our branch in the village last Saturday, and featured a bounce house, a fire truck and ambulance for kids to check out, pumpkins to decorate, and a brat fry put on by the Hamilton High School Robotics Club, among other treats and activities. About 50 people stopped in, branch manager Anne Kagerah reported.
Besides Anne, district manager Cristen Baumann, teller supervisor Lauren Carley, and personal banker Mariella Zarb helped out with the event. Up top, Cristen helps a young visitor play our spin-the-wheel game. Above, Anne and Mariella pose with Seymour, played by a robotics club member. The club took home $250 in proceeds for the brat fry. •••
Bank moves ahead with plans for North End branch
Last week, North Shore Bank filed initial paperwork with the city to build a new branch north of downtown Milwaukee, near North Water and East Pleasant streets.
Construction on the branch, our first in the North End neighborhood, should begin within a year. As of now, plans are to renovate the vacant two-story building on the site and construct an addition next to it. Above is a computer-generated rendering of the branch.
“There’s so much happening near the North End in terms of residential, business, and entertainment development, and we already have hundreds of customer households in that area who have asked for us to have a greater presence,” senior VP of retail banking Sue Doyle said in our press release. “This is a great fit for our bank, our customers, and the community, and we’re really looking forward to becoming an active and involved part of this neighborhood.” •••
Bank video contest to fund school initiatives
Know any video buffs who want to help kids? Through next Friday, October 26, the bank is still accepting entries for its “Make Change Happen” video contest, in celebration of our 95th anniversary this year.
Four winning videos will each net $1,923 to be spent on initiatives that benefit children in our North, South, and Central regions, and in the Milwaukee Public Schools. The dollar amount is a nod to the year of our founding.
To be accepted, a video must be no longer than two minutes and must explain why the project it promotes deserves the prize money. Entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges, and finalists will be announced on November 5. Through November 9, the public will be able to go online to vote for the organization they best think embodies “Make Change Happen.” Winners will be announced the week of November 12. Complete contest rules are here. •••
New Hires for October 18
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.
Mortgage loan originator Cheryl Irving is from Escanaba, Michigan, and previously worked as a mortgage loan officer, as well. Cheryl is a Kenny Chesney superfan who has seen the country-music star live around 20 times. “His songs are honest and relatable, and he’s a down-to-earth celebrity who hasn’t changed with success,” she says. “My favorite show was a few years ago at Miller Park — my daughter and I had ‘sandbar’ tickets directly in front of the stage.”
Application systems manager Kalim Khan is from Franklin and was previously vice president of development at Newtek Merchant Services. Kalim likes traveling with his family and loves the outdoors. “In 2016, our whole family went to Dubai on a desert safari,” he says. They skied on giant sand dunes — “Everyone can do it, as if you fall, the soft sand is there to catch you” — and went on a camel trek. “It’s a more personal way to experience the environment — you get a glimpse of the desert vegetation and the strange insects on the sands,” Kalim says.
Jackson Park teller supervisor Josephina Reyes was born and raised in Milwaukee. She was a teller supervisor at our El Rey branch from 2011 to 2017 and then worked at a staffing agency as a recruiter for a few months. “I learned that my passion is banking and customer service, and I decided to come back,” she says. Josephina likes making slime with her daughter and watching Netflix documentaries, but hates snow. “I can deal with the cold weather, though,” she says. •••
Taguba brings NSB to Hawaii for wedding
Deposit service representative Jamila Taguba got married last month at her parents’ house on Palehua Mountain on Oahu, Hawaii. Her friend Erik Bankhead, universal banker at Kenosha Festival, came along for the excitement.
“It was a long, HOT trip filled with tons of food, laughter, family, and friends,” Jamila says. “Erik has been my best friend since we worked together at Kenosha South — I couldn’t imagine getting married without him.” Up top are Jamila and her husband, Michael; and above, she and Erik enjoy the warm weather with Seymour Savings. •••
North Shore Shape Up: Discover mindfulness
Mindfulness has become a pretty mainstream term in the last few years, but, really, what is it? And why should you care?
Mindfulness is focusing on the thought occupying your mind or the situation you’re in, and looking at it on purpose, in the present moment, without judgment. Neither emotions nor opinions sway your focus.
There’s strong evidence that when you master mindfulness, you are able to make smarter, clearer decisions that are less driven by emotion. You are better able to set aside distractions and get more done. Overall, you feel calmer and better able to handle stressful situations. This is a great skill for children, too!
For eight weeks starting November 5, exercises will be available every Monday on the Wellness/Mind page to help you learn more about mindfulness. Learn the basics, and practice techniques at your own pace, on your own time. Each week, there will be a “mini lesson” you can review at your leisure, along with helpful exercises, suggested readings, tips, and other fun things!
Give yourself a chance to be open and give it a try. You will probably like the results!
Upcoming Events
The Great Pumpkin Chuckin’ Fest takes place this Saturday, October 20, and Sunday, October 21, at the Racine County Fairgrounds. Teams will catapult pumpkins as far as the eye can see, and there’s plenty more fun too! More upcoming events here.
