Grafton’s Caroline Holzer has deep roots in community
North Shore Bank’s theme for fiscal year 2019 is “Deep Roots and Growing Stronger.” In keeping with that sentiment, this week Grafton teller Caroline Holzer shares some of her family’s long history with the area. Caroline’s family helped found the community of Grafton in the late 1800s. In fact, part of the Grafton firehouse — which her people helped build — holds a small museum that includes photos of her ancestors. Read more about her connection to the area, and see some pictures too!

Donate to Toys for Tots by Monday
Tell your friends: There’s still time to donate to the bank’s Toys for Tots campaign — branches are accepting new, unwrapped toys through this Monday, December 10.

The 70-year-old Toys for Tots program is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and provides toys, books, and other gifts to children who otherwise might not receive anything during the winter holiday season. North Shore Bank collects items from the public at select branches every year.

Toys can be dropped off at these branches:

  • Appleton
  • Ashwaubenon
  • Burlington
  • Kenosha Central
  • Kenosha Main
  • Pulaski
  • Racine Northside
  • Racine Regency
  • Racine Westgate
  • Sister Bay
  • Sturgeon Bay East
  • Union Grove

The donated toys and other goods will be collected by Marines and distributed for Christmas. •••

New Hires for December 6
It’s always exciting to add new members to our team. Here are some of the fresh faces at North Shore Bank.

Sturgeon Bay teller Calyn Saindon is from Valmy and previously worked as a licensed CSR for American Family Insurance. She enjoys cooking, spending time with her family, taking long walks through the woods, and raising greyhounds. “We recently adopted a retired racing greyhound out of Texas,” she says. “His name is HotSauce, and I am working with him towards becoming a certified therapy dog so we can visit schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.” •••

Green Bay bankers paint to celebrate birthdays

Green Bay East universal banker Diane Leiterman (above left) and Green Bay West universal banker Tiffany Pennington celebrated their November birthdays together last month with a trip to Pinot’s Palette, where they produced some lovely art.

“We had a lot of fun!” Tiffany said. “This is our second year doing this for our birthdays, but Diane goes a lot more often. I imagine she has quite the collection of paintings!”

About eight friends painted with them in the private room, Diane noted, including Ashwaubenon universal banker Dawn Jelen and Dawn’s daughter Jennifer. Above are Diane’s painting at left and Tiffany’s at right. •••

North Shore Shape Up: Omega-3s may fight cancer
Here’s another reminder to make sure you get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, from Cleveland Clinic Wellness. The clinic notes that in a study performed on animals, consuming more of the nutrient was linked to a lower rate of breast cancer tumors forming and spreading, compared against diets full of the omega-6 acids found in vegetable and seed oils. More on that:

While you need both fats, the ratio you consume may affect your health. Unfortunately, the typical American diet includes too little omega-3s and an overdose (think 15 times the desired amount!) of omega-6s, mostly coming from the refined vegetable and seed oils in processed foods, packaged snacks, and fast food. That high ratio of omega-6s to omega-3s may contribute to chronic inflammation and a range of diseases, including breast cancer.

The clinic recommends making whole veggies, beans, and fruit the base of your diet, and getting in at least two servings of omega-3-rich fish every week, such as wild salmon or sardines. •••
