While we haven’t gotten as much snow as usual, the Wisconsin winter still features the standard dry air and consequent uncomfortable, itchy skin. Cleveland Clinic Wellness suggests a humidifier as the obvious choice for addressing the problem. If you don’t have one, simply leaving big bowls of water around the house will make the air more moist as the liquid evaporates.
What else can you do? “[K]eep those showers short and warm,” the clinic advises. “As much as you may want to linger under a blast of soothing hot water on cold winter mornings, long, hot showers dry out your skin (and can send your utility bill soaring!). Immediately after your shower, gently pat yourself dry and slather a heavy cream or coconut oil on your body to seal in the moisture.”
They also recommend slathering Vaseline on your lips and cheeks before you head out to ski, sled, or for a winter hike. Stay supple!
