Magic, Jedi, witches, and more: This year’s Halloween memories

Last week, we asked bank employees to share their Halloween photos and memories with Shorelines. Here they are!

“When I was younger, I would go with my mom’s side of the family to a magic show at the Modjeska Theatre in Milwaukee. It was called David Seebach’s Illusions in the Night, and the magician would do impressive magic tricks and tell stories about the haunted buildings and other spooky things that happened in the area. We would always reserve a table in the front, and all of the cousins would sit together. I was the oldest so I sat in the middle, and whenever my brother or one of my cousins would get scared, they would sit on me or very close to me.

“Every year, somebody from our group would be chosen to participate in a magic trick! My dad got his head ‘chopped off’ by a guillotine once, and I had long nails pressed through me. I was so excited to do this, I tripped going up the stairs!

“At the end of the show, the magician would talk about how the theater we were in was haunted by many ghosts — and then the lights would shut off, loud scary noises would play, and people who were part of the show would run around making more noise and spraying people with Silly String or confetti cannons, which is terrifying when it is pitch black and you have no idea what is going on. After the first year, we knew what happened when the show ends, but still, each year when the lights would come back on, I would be under a pile of my cousins.”

Samantha Damman, Personal Banker, Greendale

Samantha’s daughter Layla will be 5 next month, and this year she’s going as Rey from Star Wars. She might be going to see Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker when it comes out in December — but, Samantha notes, “she doesn’t sit still during movies.”

Kerri Collins, District Manager

Kerri’s daughter Kelly as the Cat in the Hat, Katie as a green M&M, Grandma Fay, and Molly as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, circa 2003.

“Halloween has always been a fan favorite for our family. When my three girls were growing up, my mom would dress up and join in the fun! My kids loved when Grandma Fay dressed up as a witch. Most people had no idea it was her behind the makeup and the wig!”

“My Grandpa Skip is a Vietnam veteran who kept his ghillie suit — a camouflage outfit that makes it look like you are covered with plants and vegetation. On Halloween, he used to put it on and hide under the bushes during trick-or-treat hours and jump out and scare older kids. It almost always worked, and we would laugh the whole time. One year he even came trick-or-treating with us and put a bunch of Christmas ornaments on it and said he was a Christmas tree. When I pointed out that he was missing a star on the top of the tree, he said his face was the star.”

Valerie Moonen, Teller Supervisor, Greendale

Valerie’s 11-year-old Savannah and 3-month-old Aevery went trick-or-treating together this past weekend as a killer clown and a narwhal, respectively. “They had fun walking around the neighborhoods,” Valerie says.

Many thanks to everyone who shared their photos and memories! And to everyone at North Shore Bank: Have a scary good time and stay safe tonight!
