As pandemic drags on, be aware of kids’ mental health

In two years, COVID-19 has completely upended our way of life. As a society, we’ve been through so much in a short time: masking, isolation, disruption of routines, deaths, new health protocols, and much more. Adapting to these challenges — and to the uncertainty presented by the emergence of new variants — has caused grief, stress, and loneliness in each of us.

This post was shared by Advocate Aurora EAP.

In fact, these mental health challenges are so pervasive that the medical community has taken to calling them the “fourth wave” of the pandemic. This “wave” wasn’t spurred by one of the virus variants, but rather is the result of the pandemic’s impacts on society and is defined as the “psychic trauma, mental illness, economic injury, and burnout” caused by COVID-19. The fourth wave has resulted in higher rates of anxiety and depression in adults.

Unfortunately, the fourth wave is impacting our children too. Read about danger signs to watch for, and what to do if you see them in your kids.

Swing with Shorewood raises over $33K for schools

North Shore Bank employees came out for the annual Swing with Shorewood fundraiser gala last Saturday, May 7, at Milwaukee’s Discovery World science and technology museum.

“Because last year’s event was virtual, I appreciated this opportunity to connect with others from the community even more,” Shorewood area branch manager Shannon Weber said. “The gala was held on the same day as the Kentucky Derby, so that was the theme of the night.”

The event includes an online auction and raises money for the Shorewood SEED Foundation, which helps fund Shorewood’s public schools. The day after the gala, the foundation posted on Facebook that Swing with Shorewood had raised over $33,000, beating its $30,000 goal.

“We all loved the music, food, and atmosphere,” Shannon said. “But the biggest impact was seeing how this event helps the school district provide programs and equipment for their students. I am so glad North Shore Bank can be a part of this.”

Besides being a sponsor for Swing with Shorewood, North Shore Bank also contributed a basket of goodies as a raffle prize. The prize included an insulated cooler, four tickets to the Milwaukee County Zoo (as well as four passes to ride the Safari Train and a parking pass), two water bottles, four stuffed animals, and blowing bubbles — as well as some sweet treats. •••

Know how to avoid a scam? Take our phishing quiz

As you surely know, phishing is a type of scam in which scammers send fraudulent messages hoping to trick the recipients into sharing valuable financial information or other private data. Unfortunately, it’s also lamentably common. According to the FBI, it is now the most common technique used by cybercriminals.

So, are you sure you know how to spot one of these scam attempts? And do your customers know?

Our free online phishing quiz at banksneveraskthat.com can help answer those questions. Check it out and tell your customers to do so too! •••

ONE MINUTE OF MINDFULNESS

Can you quiet your mind and hear your inner guide?

Every one of us has wisdom hidden within, ready to guide us when we need it. But to feel that subtle internal influence, we must become quiet within, so that strong emotions settle down. We don’t need complete calm — only enough to allow that inner wisdom to find an opening.

Try this meditation for one minute today, or longer if you wish:

TAKE A DEEP BREATH and see if you can notice your inner guide. Don’t try hard. Just let it show up.

I make way for the infinite wisdom that resides within my heart. As I clear the inner space, the best part of my nature shines, and I move through life with intuitive grace.

How did this meditation go for you? Share your experience with your fellow North Shore Bank employees at shorelines@northshorebank.com and you’ll be entered to win a copy of Mindfulness in Plain English, by Bhante Gunaratana.

If you’d like a daily email reminder to practice one minute of mindfulness, email us with the subject “Mindfulness reminder.” •••
