Jim Saladin remembers 2011 honor flight
In conjunction with our annual worn flag collection, North Shore Bank and our employees also donate money to two groups that send American military veterans on honor flights — free daylong trips by chartered jet to Washington, D.C., to see the monuments in our nation’s capital. Around the Bank

Candy Cane Lane: West Allis Tellers Cristin Erdmann and Allison Gadbois volunteered at Candy Cane Lane, raising money for the MACC Fund, on Black Friday. “Elfie,” the human Elf on a Shelf, showed up too — prompting the tellers to get a “selfie with Elfie.”
Shorewood designated “senior-friendly”: The Shorewood Connects project — which was “developed to enhance the ability of older residents to remain in and contribute to the life of the Village,” according to its web page — has certified North Shore Bank’s branch in the village as a Senior-Friendly Business.
In a letter to Personal Banker Cole Heinrich, project facilitator Sue Kelley wrote: “Our senior volunteers found the bank welcoming, easy to navigate and attractive. They appreciated the local, friendly atmosphere, and the large, accommodating parking lot. They noted the clear signage on both the front and the back entrances. They also appreciated the bank’s proximity to mass transit. The volunteers noted that the website lists community events that the bank is involved in and that there is a neighbor table on site.” Kelley also made suggestions for making the branch even more friendly to seniors: making power-of-attorney materials available for customers and adding a magnifying lens to the counter where customers fill out deposit slips.
Celebrations
Deposit Services Supervisor Suzie Prittie and her husband, Brian, welcomed daughter Jordyn last week. The baby was 20.5 inches and weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces at birth. “She’s absolutely perfect! She’s sleeping and eating great,” Suzie wrote in an email to AVP Natalie Canadeo. Congratulations, Suzie!

For some, coffee can cause heart problems: New research suggests that drinking coffee may reduce your risk of dementia, type 2 diabetes, and liver cancer, but take note: Some people are “slow caffeine metabolizers” who could run a higher risk of heart problems from consuming too much coffee. If your coffee habit gets you noticeably wired during the day and gives you trouble sleeping at night, try switching to decaf after your first cup. According to researchers, it seems to be just as good for your liver as the strong stuff, and could help with diabetes as well.
